Grab some filament and make yourself comfortable. Today we are talking about the Pumpkin buddy 3D print, how the idea developed, and why this one earned a place in our growing collection.
The pumpkin buddy 3D print family just picked up a new member, and this one stands a little taller and a little odder than the original. The Butternut Pumpkin Buddy keeps the same friendly spirit as the classic Halloween Buddy but trades the round gourd shape for the elongated, slightly bulging silhouette of a butternut squash. It is a small shift that gives the character a different kind of charm, somewhere between cute and a bit lopsided in a way that works in its favor.
Anyone who already prints the original will recognize the family resemblance right away. The new shape just gives the character more presence on a shelf, since the taller body changes the proportions compared to the stubbier original design.
Two versions of the pumpkin buddy 3D print
This model comes as a Normal Version with arms and hands, and an Articulated Version with movable print-in-place legs and shoes. The normal version is the simpler of the two, a static figure built for a clean, straightforward print. The articulated version adds personality through motion. Its legs print in place, so the joints come off the plate already working, ready to pose without any assembly of separate parts.
That articulation is really what sets the Butternut Buddy apart from being just another static decoration. You can sit it down, stand it up, or give it a slight lean, and the shoes add a nice finishing detail that makes the character feel more like a little figure than a simple ornament.
How the stem works without a multicolor printer
The stem is printed separately from the body, which means you don’t need AMS or any multicolor setup to get a two-tone result. Print the stem in brown or green, print the body in your pumpkin color of choice, and glue the two parts together once they’re off the plate. It’s a simple workaround that opens up a lot of color combinations without touching your slicer’s color settings.
The write-up suggests classic orange as the obvious choice, but there’s room to experiment with other seasonal tones if you want your own take on the character. Since the parts are separate, swapping colors between prints costs you nothing extra in setup time, which is part of why this pumpkin buddy 3D print has become easy to customize for whoever is printing it.
An easy print with no supports
Both versions are designed to print without supports, including the articulated legs, which is notable given that print-in-place joints often need extra attention from the slicer. That makes it a reasonable pick for anyone newer to multipart or articulated prints, since there’s no support removal to fuss over and no risk of snapping a thin support structure off a joint.
The model is built as a multipart file, so you’re printing the body, the stem, and in the articulated version, the leg and shoe assemblies, as distinct pieces that come together afterward. That structure is part of what keeps the print simple despite the added personality of the moving parts.
Where it sits once it is printed
Once assembled, the Butternut Buddy is sized for a desk, a shelf, or a cabinet, anywhere a bit of Halloween or autumn character fits in. It pairs naturally with the original Pumpkin Buddy if you already have one printed, letting you build out a small seasonal lineup rather than a single standalone piece. The taller, quirkier shape makes it easy to tell the two apart at a glance, even in matching orange.
It also works as a quick gift for the fall season, something to print in an evening and hand over without much fuss. Between the two versions, the articulated one takes a bit more attention to print-in-place detail, but neither asks for anything beyond basic FDM printing and a bottle of glue for the stem. For anyone building a small seasonal collection, this pumpkin buddy 3D print slots in as a second character rather than a replacement for the original.
That is all from the workshop for now. Keep the filament dry, the build plate clean, and a little space free on the print queue for whatever we come up with next.
