The printers are humming again, which usually means we have something to talk about. This time it is the Print in place box storage, and we are taking you behind the design to show what makes it special.

Print in place box storage means you print a container with its lid already attached and hinged, and it comes off the plate ready to use. No glue, no screws, no separate lid to lose. That’s the idea behind this set of boxes from Sektor 7 Studios.

The hinge is the part that makes or breaks a print-in-place design, and this one is built to survive repeated use. It’s described as strong and integrated, meant for frequent opening and closing rather than a one-time novelty print. That’s an important distinction for anyone who has tried a hinge that snapped after a week on a desk.

What problem does print in place box storage solve?

Most small storage boxes need assembly, or they need you to source a hinge, hardware, or glue. Print in place box storage skips all of that. You load the file, print it, and it works right off the build plate. For someone who wants a container for screws, small tools, or desk clutter without ordering parts or waiting for adhesive to cure, that’s the appeal.

It also means less friction between printing something and actually using it. There’s no assembly step where things can go wrong, no small hinge pins to align by hand. The mechanism is baked into the geometry itself.

Sizes and Gridfinity compatibility

These boxes come in multiple sizes, which matters because a box sized for a phone charger is not the box you want for loose screws or a stack of cards. Having a range built into the release means you can match the box to the job instead of scaling one design and hoping the hinge still holds its proportions.

Gridfinity compatibility is the other half of the design. The boxes accept Gridfinity inlays inside, so you can divide the interior however your contents demand, or leave it open and use the box as a plain standalone container. Because they follow the Gridfinity system, they combine with other Gridfinity modules, letting you build out a full modular organization setup rather than a single box sitting alone on a shelf.

What does it look like on a desk or in a workshop?

The design is minimal and clean, without ornamentation, which fits an object meant to be looked at daily. It’s meant to fit into a workspace setup without standing out, which is exactly what you want from an organizer. A box that draws attention to itself is failing at its job.

That plain look is also what lets it move between settings. The same box that holds resistors on an electronics bench could hold pens on a desk or spare hardware in a kitchen drawer. The release specifically calls out desk, workshop, kitchen, and EDC setups as places these boxes are meant to live, and the shared design language means they won’t look out of place moving between any of those.

Building a storage system from one box

If you already run a Gridfinity system, this print in place box storage line adds lidded, hinged units to a setup that’s often just open bins and trays. If you don’t run Gridfinity, the boxes still work fine as standalone containers, which keeps them useful outside that ecosystem too.

For anyone building out an EDC kit, a small hinged box that snaps shut cleanly is more useful than a fabric pouch, because it protects contents and stays closed in a bag or a drawer. That’s a reason to print one on its own, independent of any Gridfinity layout you might be planning.

Getting the files

Predefined print profiles and 3MF files set up for Bambu Lab printers are available through membership, alongside the STL files for anyone printing on other machines. Given the range of sizes on offer, it’s worth printing one of the smaller boxes first to check hinge tolerance on your own printer before committing to a full shelf of them.

Enough talking — time to let the printer do some work. Have fun with the Print in place box storage, and we will see you again soon with another design straight from the Sektor 7 workshop.
